The Texas Ski Addicts' ski trip for 2006 is a go! This page is meant as an easy way to keep track of the trip information, cost, dates, and schedule. Please email me if anything is wrong here.
We will be skiing from Mar. 11th - Mar. 18th.
We will be staying at the Zephyr Moutain Lodge in Winter Park. ![]() ![]() The lodge is ski in/ski out and is located and is located 110 feet from the Zephyr Ski lift at the Winter Park Base Area (see trail map for more info). They have four outdoor hot tubs that totally kick ass and have a great view of the mountain. There are restaurants, bars, and shops in the complex and we're renting our equipment just downstairs in the same building. You have to be able to ski a blue or blue-black run to ski easily into the lodge, but, we'll take care of that the first day. Otherwise you have walk about 5 minutes uphill from the Winter Park base area, but it isn't too bad. This place totally rocks, we've stayed there before and it is the epitomy of convenience when it comes to ski vacations.
The motto from last year was that we can rest when we're dead, so for that reason we will be skiing for 6 days and staying for 7 nights.
We tend to hit the mountain hard and fast and explore as much of the terrain as we can in the time we have there. All of us except Michelle
will be skiing the whole time. The new people this year will spend the first morning with me getting up to the same level as the
rest of the group (free lessons) and, with a little trust and confidence, you'll be on a black run by the end of the first day.
With that in mind, here is a schedule for the trip as it stands right now:
We have reserved 2 one bedroom condos at the Zephyr this year. The rooms each have a queen size bed and a queen size pull-out couch that are rumored to be quite comfortable, so there will be four people per room. Based on knowing people, I've already assigned beds/sleeping parters. If someone doesn't like the arrangement, we can alter it to suit people's needs. Here are the total prices and how they break down per person. All prices are figured for 8 people coming.

We had an incredible time last year and were hitting some pretty intense runs by the end of the trip. This year, we have six whole days to hone our skills. Each run on the mountain takes an average of 10 minutes to ski down, and then an average of 15 minutes to ride back up. That's 25 minutes/run. Winter Park has 134 designated trails and 2,762 acres of skiable terrain. If we ski for 7 hours/day, that's about 17 runs per day. By the end of the trip we can ski 102 runs, that's 76% of the ski area!! So, the bottom line is that we can really kick some butt this year. It would be really helpful for all those skiing to be in good shape before they come up. It is important to begin training for a ski trip at least 8 weeks before the trip happens. This year, the 8 week line occurs on Jan. 14th, 2006. Running for ~30 minutes, 4 days a week should help a lot. Swimming for the same amount of time is also really good. Rowing is excellent training for skiing because the sports utilize the same muscle groups. Being in good cardiovascular shape will help you acclimate to the altitude and make it so that you are more able to keep up with the group. In addition to cardio, it is a good idea to do strength training. The most important muscles for skiing are your quadriceps. So, lots of squats are important. In addition to that, calf raises, glut exercises and hamstrings are all equally important for balance and control while skiing. It is also very important to have strong abs and back muscles for upright support. Here are some home based ski exercises that will help you a lot if you do them as they specify at least 8 weeks in advance. They helped me a lot last year. Anyway, that is the trip. Let me know if there are any questions and I'll try to answer them.
